BDSM, becoming and the flows of desire by Charlotta Carlström

ABSTRACT

This research analyzes the process of becoming among BDSM practitioners, based on a five-year qualitative ethnographic study of Bondage and Discipline/Dominance and Submission/Sadism and Masochism (BDSM) in Sweden. Comprehensive interviews were conducted with 29 self-identified BDSM practitioners, and their narratives were examined using theme analysis. Incorporating the Deleuzian notion of becoming, BDSM is perceived as a fluid and communal occurrence intricately linked to dreams, memories, and yearning, facilitated by currents of desire. Engaging in BDSM may be perceived as a process of progressive development, creativity, and connection, wherein desire is regarded not as a deficiency or necessity, but as a means of striving and self-improvement. A comprehensive exploration of the becoming process helps elucidate the reasons for individuals’ engagement in BDSM practices.
